What is Pollinating Projects?

Pollinating Projects was a research initiative conducted for the STING – Science and Technology for Pollinating Insects project of the Joint Research Center of the European Commission. Spanning across four countries in 2021, the project aimed to empower local communities, particularly youth initiatives and beekeepers, to become ambassadors for pollinator conservation.

Purpose

Through hands-on workshops and research, the project explored ways to improve EU support for citizen engagement in pollinator protection and helped participants strengthen their conservation efforts. 

Results

A comprehensive blueprint on citizen engagement for pollinators.

Key Achievements

  • Engaged 11 workshops in 4 countries (Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy), with a focus on empowering youth and beekeepers.
  • Delivered capacity-building on pollinator conservation, project management, and funding opportunities.
  • Led the project alongside the international campaign #BikeForBees, enhancing the project’s visibility and impact.
  • Contributor to the blueprint for effective citizen engagement in pollinator protection.

The workshops provided essential tools for individuals and groups to increase their impact in pollinator conservation, and to learn how the European Union can better support citizens who take action:

Capacity-Building: Understanding the basics of pollinator conservation and the role of various species in ecosystem health.

Show Yourself!: Guiding participants in presenting their initiatives and making their voices heard.

Linking Projects to Pollinators: Systems Thinking and practical actions to incorporate pollinator protection into existing initiatives.

Project Management: Delivered fundamental skills with a focus on leverage points, impact assessment and securing funding.
